  • Then Tribal is the "Social Health" layer that combines the two—using psychological scaffolding to build relationships that actually last, while selling the resulting wellness metrics and retention benefits to enterprise clients.

Investment Memo: Like’s & Risks

What I like

A B2B Hedge 

The single greatest weakness of the traditional dating app business model is churn: a successful product eventually eliminates its own users (by pairing them off). If you continue to use a dating app in a relationship, you’re probably a pretty shitty person.

Tribal mitigates this existential flaw by diversifying into the "Connect by Tribal" B2B proposition. Tribal unlocks institutional budgets that are immune to consumer fickleness.

Why does this matter? Australian universities and corporations are currently facing a crisis of engagement. Student retention is a massive financial driver for universities, with the loss of a single domestic student costing an institution between $30,000 and $50,000 in lost tuition and funding. "Student loneliness" is a primary vector for dropout, particularly among international students and rural relocations. Similarly, corporate "work from home" policies have eroded culture, leading to isolation, turnover and quiet quitting. 

This is a pretty audacious GTM, but Rachel has given me confidence that they’ve made strong inroads with a major Australian-based university, and a pilot will be underway soon.

High-Fidelity User Intent & Founder Market Fit

  • A 90% completion rate for an in-depth compatibility quiz is exceptionally high for a mobile app, where drop-off rates in onboarding flows can be below 30%. To me, this is a signal of Psychological Buy-in. Users have invested time answering psychometric questions regarding values, lifestyle, and goals. Tribal filters out "tyre kickers" and users seeking low-effort gratification, creating a high-trust user base, similar to the early days of eHarmony, but updated for a mobile-first, Gen Z demographic.

  • Founder market fit: Rachel Harker brings deep clinical authority. As a former Clinical Lead at headspace, she possesses a nuanced understanding of the youth mental health crisis that a typical tech founder lacks. 

The "Slow Reveal" as counter positioning

Tribal’s core differentiator (blurring photos for the first 72 hours) is counter-positioning against the visual primacy of Tinder. While risky (see "Risks" below), it may be well-timed for the 2026 zeitgeist.

  • The Fatigue Factor: With 86.4% of users reporting body dissatisfaction due to dating apps, there is a distinct market segment (likely 15-20% of the TAM) that is actively hostile to "swipe culture." Tribal positions itself as the ethical antidote.

  • The Mechanism (Investiture Theory): By forcing interaction via voice memos and text before the visual reveal, Tribal creates a "sunk cost" of emotional investment. When the photo is revealed, the user is already chemically bonded via oxytocin (from voice/connection), making them less likely to reject a match based on superficial traits. This theoretically increases the Match-to-Date conversion rate, a metric on which Tinder/Bumble often underperform due to the "paradox of choice."

  • Gamification of Depth: The 72-hour window turns the photo reveal into a reward for social labour. This drives retention, as users must return to the app to "unlock" the face, boosting DAU/MAU ratios (currently trending at a healthy 32.5%).

Potential Risks

The "S'More" Trap: Friction vs. Liquidity

The history of dating apps is littered with the corpses of companies that tried to hide photos. S'More ("Something More") launched with the exact same premise: blurred photos that unblur with conversation.

Despite raising $3.2M USD and generating buzz, it failed to scale as a standalone app and was acquired by Tawkify to be shut down/absorbed (TechCrunch).

Similarly, Taffy and JigTalk attempted "reveal" mechanics (jigsaw puzzles, blurs) and failed to achieve mass adoption.

  • The Biological Barrier: Visual attraction is a primary biological driver. While users say they want personality first, their behaviour often proves otherwise. These are ultimately marketplaces, and they need "liquidity" to function. Liquidity is the critical mass of active users needed for a marketplace to function.

  • The Lemon Problem: If a user invests 72 hours in chatting only to find they are physically incompatible with the reveal, the "disappointment churn" is severe. Repeated instances of this lead to rapid user attrition. Tribal relies on its "Tribal Map" compatibility engine being so accurate that the physical reveal becomes secondary—a remarkably high bar to clear.
